Finishing and Polishing

Finishing and polishing is the name given to the process of preparing a component from raw casting prior to it being plated, usually with Chrome, Silver or Gold. So a raw casting has to be produced into highly polished component.

This involves many processes:

The components are polished on a machine called a polishing lathe. This is a double spindle lathe.

Tools are placed on the spindles, which rotate at high speed to a rate of 5,000 revolutions per minute.

The components are first a rough course sanded belt and then worked through various smoother grit belts until the job or component is highly polished (Similar to preparation needed before a car is resprayed).

The component is then polished on a soft stitched polishing mop and then coloured off on an even softer mop (also placed on the spindle). The component is then ready for plating.
